Popularity: 713    Zoom in font    Zoom out font Website: http://hawaiimacnut.org/
Introduction: The Hawaii Macadamia Nut Association (HMNA) is comprised of members from all sectors of the macadamia nut industry in Hawaii. Its membership is made up of growers with only a small amount of acreage to growers with thousands of acres. They all have one thing in common-they grow the finest Hawaii macadamia nuts. It is guided by an elected Board of Directors and staffed by a paid full time executive director.

Hawaii Macadamia Nut AssociationHow is HMNA funded?

The HMNA is funded in two ways. First by nominal membership dues which are as follows:

Member: (grower, manufacturer or processor) - $25
Associate: $75
International: $150
The second and primary source of funding is through voluntary assessments. Assessments are in addition to membership dues for those who grow or process macadamia nuts. Voluntary assessments are:

Grower $0.0025 (1/4 cent) per pound NIS
Processor $0.0025 (1/4 cent) per pound NIS
Assessments are collected from the growers by the processors and paid to HMNA or the grower may pay his assessment to HMNA directly.

What does HMNA do?

HMNA uses funds to provide education and research for its members as well as the generic promotion of the Hawaii macadamia nut. Information is disseminated though its website and quarterly publication, Mac Facts. Macadamia nut research is generally contracted to the University of Hawaii CTAHR; USDA-ARS- PBARC; or the Hawaii Agricultural Research Center (HARC). As a member of the International Tree Nut Council HMNA has access to research on tree nuts that includes macadamia nuts. Regional grower meetings are held during the year and the Association's annual conference and general membership meeting is held in the spring. A government affairs committee works with the Hawaii Farm Bureau on legislative issues related to agriculture.
